Whether you are a first mum, or a season pro – the prospect of delivering your baby is one often fraught with emotions. Of course, there is the excitement of the getting to meet your baby, but it’s also very normal to feel stressed, anxious and scared. The mindset to which you enter labour can severely impact the outcome of your delivery. Mums who are very anxious and experience high levels of stress during labour, are known to experience much higher levels of pain in their delivery, diminished contractions/prolonged labour, delayed wound healing and they are also more likely to need emergency c-sections.
With this is mind, when I had a mum contact me last week, asking if I could recommend some essential oils to help support her labour – I know that her emotionally well-being was an important factor to consider when selecting the appropriate oils for her.
So this is what I selected:
Wild Orange – (which is proven to decrease anxiety and pain in labour)
Peppermint – which may be able to help overcome tiredness and exhaustion (particularly useful if it proved to be a prolonged labour)
A blend called ‘balance’ – which is very calming, grounding and helps increase focus
And Clary Sage – this should NEVER be used unless you are full-term as it is believed to stimulate labour and contractions. However, it also strengthens the intensity and regularity of contractions. Great if you are overdue, or approaching your due date, but could be detrimental if used too early in the pregnancy, so be sure to use with caution.
Anyway, I’m delighted to report that a beautiful, healthy baby boy was delivered one day after his due date – and to quote the mum, throughout the labour she ‘was sniffing the oil like her life depended on it’ and she did the whole thing, without any pain relief at all. What an absolute champion!
If there are any other ladies out there, who would like advice on essential oils to help support them during pregnancy and labour, please do contact me, I would love to help.
